PLAY, DISCUSSION FOCUS ON SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

Iowa Stage Theatre Company and Des Moines Social Club will present “#MeToo: Time’s Up, Des Moines” at Des Moines Social Club’s Kum & Go Theater on Thursday, Feb. 8.

The night will feature a reading of "The Hashtag Me, Too," a one-act play written by local actor and playwright Kerry Skram, followed by a discussion of the play and the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns.

The play was written in response to recent revelations of sexual misconduct by prominent men in the arts, politics, business and media. It focuses on an intense conversation between a married couple concerning workplace encounters, intimidation and the consequences of speaking out.

Discussion panelists include:

  • Brenda Anderson, a clinical social worker and therapist.
  • Kirsten Anderson, the former communications director for the Iowa Senate Republican caucus who was awarded a $1.75 million judgment in a sexual harassment case against the Iowa Senate.
  • Amy Bix, an Iowa State University history professor who focuses on women and the roles of gender in cultural history.
  • Kim Haymes, an Iowa Stage Theatre company member who protested abuse she experienced at the Profiles Theater in Chicago, which subsequently closed. Other Chicago theaters developed a workplace policy to avoid abuses and started the #NotInOurHouse movement.

The event will culminate with Iowa Stage Theatre Company’s adoption of the Chicago theaters' policy. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the event begins at 6 p.m. There is no admission fee, although donations will be accepted to support the #MeToo and #TimesUp efforts in Central Iowa.

Remember this name (we dare you to try): Pasta di Semola di Grano Duro all'Uovo. Tell us your opinion at the next dsm unveiling party.

THIS PASTA WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

By Wini Moranville

I don’t generally spend $8 for a package of pasta, but that may be changing now that I’ve discovered that Gateway Market carries the Rustichella d’Abruzzo brand of Pasta di Semola di Grano Duro all'Uovo.

That’s durum-wheat semolina pasta with eggs, for those of us who don’t parlono italiano. The egg is key—it adds deep yellow-gold color to the pasta and unmistakably rich flavor. But there’s something else at work here, according to Gateway chef/partner George Formaro.

“That brand is amazing,” he says. If you ever knew an Italian mother or grandmother that made pasta, and you noticed the almost magical touch that they used to prepare their pasta, you would swear that these guys were conjuring up that same magic. I think of my mom every time I use it.”

In fact, it’s so flavorful and rich that Formaro says he saves the water used to cook the pasta, “like it were a fine simmered stock,” and adds it back into the dishes he’s creating with the pasta. That helps him dress the pasta lightly, more like you would a salad, rather than slathering it with the traditional Italian red sauces we all know and love.

My favorite way to serve it is, in fact, French: en persillade (with garlic and parsley). I melt a little butter, sauté some garlic and parsley just until their fragrances are released, then toss this mixture with the cooked pasta and a little of the cooking water. This makes a simple yet refined side dish to the braises of the season.

Gateway Market is at 2002 Woodland Ave., 515-243-1754; gatewaymarket.com.

YOUNG SOLOIST OPENS SYMPHONY CONCERT

Barely old enough to enter a beer hall, violinist Simone Porter has already performed in some of the world’s great concert halls. She made her professional solo debut at age 10 with the Seattle Symphony and her international debut in London at age 13.

Porter, now 21, and her violin, now 272, return from Los Angeles to play once again with the Des Moines Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, at the Des Moines Civic Center.

Porter will open the program with Sibelius’ brilliant, impassioned Violin Concerto. The symphony then will perform Stravinski’s “Petrouchka,” led by renowned English guest conductor Christopher Seaman. A Concert Prelude Talk begins at 6:45 p.m.
