What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray used to examine the breasts to help detect breast cancer. A certified mammographer takes x-ray images of the breast and a board certified radiologist examines the images to look for any abnormalities. Broadlawns offers both screening and diagnostic mammography as well as ultrasound and/or stereotactic needle-guided biopsy/aspiration to evaluate the breast.
When should I have a mammogram?
Regular mammograms are an important part of preventative healthcare. It is recommended that women age 40 and older get yearly mammograms. Those at an increased risk due to family history or other factors should talk to their primary care provider about screening earlier.
Mammograms do not require a doctor’s referral. Most insurance plans cover the cost of a mammogram, and free or low-cost mammograms are available for individuals with limited income or no insurance.
Early detection is key
You should consult with your primary care provider if you notice any changes in either breast including:
- Lump, hard knot, or thickening inside the breast or underarm area
- Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening
- Change in size or shape
- Dimpling or puckering of the skin
- Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
- Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
- Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
- Pain in one spot that does not go away
