On Tuesday, KCCI obtained documents that will set "gender identity policies" in writing for Des Moines area Catholic churches and schools. The documents will be released later this month to the Diocese of Des Moines staff. KCCI has confirmed that they are legitimate. The policies will go to all diocesan parishes, schools, organizations, and institutions. They will apply to all church employees, personnel, volunteers, and those "entrusted to the care of the church."In the documents, the diocese leads by saying anyone experiencing gender dysphoria is "unconditionally loved by Jesus Christ and by the Church."The document also quotes verses from the Bible for the policy, saying if the church ratifies or reinforces someone's disconnect between biological sex, it is 'not genuine compassion.' It also says "the disruption of normal sexual development... or the removal of healthy sexual and reproductive organs, is a type of 'mutilation.'" The document also says that everyone, man or woman, "should acknowledge and accept their sexual identity." The policies will take effect Jan. 16 for all churches, schools, and organizations. Some of the policies that will take effect are:No one may designate a "preferred pronoun" in speech or writing, when related to minister activities.Everyone must use the bathroom or locker room that matches their biological sexEveryone should follow the dress code or uniform according to their biological sexParticipation in school sports or activities must be consistent with biological sexNo person can have on-site, or distribute, medications meant for gender reassignmentThe diocese says if someone experiences gender dysphoria — they should be guided to ministers and counselors to help guide them by church policy. The diocese told KCCI that the policies are "part of a lengthy process... to address questions that have come forth by leaders in parishes and schools."

The policies will go to all diocesan parishes, schools, organizations, and institutions. They will apply to all church employees, personnel, volunteers, and those "entrusted to the care of the church."

In the documents, the diocese leads by saying anyone experiencing gender dysphoria is "unconditionally loved by Jesus Christ and by the Church."

The document also quotes verses from the Bible for the policy, saying if the church ratifies or reinforces someone's disconnect between biological sex, it is 'not genuine compassion.' It also says "the disruption of normal sexual development... or the removal of healthy sexual and reproductive organs, is a type of 'mutilation.'" The document also says that everyone, man or woman, "should acknowledge and accept their sexual identity."

The policies will take effect Jan. 16 for all churches, schools, and organizations.

Some of the policies that will take effect are:

  • No one may designate a "preferred pronoun" in speech or writing, when related to minister activities.
  • Everyone must use the bathroom or locker room that matches their biological sex
  • Everyone should follow the dress code or uniform according to their biological sex
  • Participation in school sports or activities must be consistent with biological sex
  • No person can have on-site, or distribute, medications meant for gender reassignment

The diocese says if someone experiences gender dysphoria — they should be guided to ministers and counselors to help guide them by church policy.

The diocese told KCCI that the policies are "part of a lengthy process... to address questions that have come forth by leaders in [their] parishes and schools."
