Meet Erin Knupp, one of the Business Record's 2024 Forty Under 40. She is the director of business development at Boyd Jones. Outside of work, she volunteers on the board of directors for Urban Dreams and the Des Moines Downtown Chamber of Commerce. She also serves on the fundraising committee for the Center at Sixth, a nonprofit focused on affording equal business opportunities to Black and brown business owners. Her biggest passion is connecting others. "In my profession, it's not what you know – it's who you know," she says. "I have accomplished a lot of things because of the generosity of other business professionals willing to connect me to others and help point me in the right direction. I want to do the same for everyone I have an encounter with." https://lnkd.in/g5QTfSFW

As planting season gets underway for farms all around Iowa, the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative is in the early stages of a project focused on giving farmers better data and tools to make decisions that will affect their operations and the environment for years to come. Mike Castellano, who leads the research effort out of Iowa State University, said the limited data Iowa State collects and uses to recommend the ideal nitrogen fertilizer rates to farmers is comparable to only collecting weather data from a few places around the state. “Imagine if we only collected weather data at a dozen places in the state of Iowa, how accurate our forecasts would be,” Castellano said. “Imagine if we stopped collecting weather data tomorrow, how good the weather forecast for next month would be.” Read more about how the initiative is partnering with farmers and nitrogen’s effect on water quality in today’s cover story: https://lnkd.in/g-wJYSM4

Get to know the 2024 Iowa State University Ivy College of Business Commercial Real Estate Professional of the Year: Justin Lossner. We asked him: What’s changed in the commercial real estate sector, particularly office space, since you started your career? "Traditionally you had the C-suite, the big offices and specific space for the executive admin team. It was this hierarchy you saw play out, which can naturally create a little division in how leadership communicates with the workforce. So that’s changed over the past 10 years. We’ve gone away from that to where it’s not completely unheard of for us to have a CEO sitting in a cube next to the sales team or whatever. "The way leadership and the rest of the workforce occupy space has changed. Historically, an office was a dense work environment, which is not efficient and frankly doesn’t promote a lot of collaboration. I’d say about 10 years ago, that’s when we really started to see traction led by tech companies. "I give a lot of credit to how some of these young entrepreneurial companies thought about occupying space, and it was just completely different than the old guard. I think a lot of that flexibility in where you work had already been happening. I don’t know if a whole lot new came out of the pandemic except for the fact it sped up a lot of the stuff." Read more:

A little over a year ago, the completion of six industrial projects in the Greater Des Moines area added over 2 million square feet of warehouse and flex space to the market, increasing vacancy rates in the sector, reports from CBRE Inc. and JLL showed. Where does that space stand now? How is the cost of materials and labor affecting the market? What other challenges is the commercial real estate industry facing? We asked several local leaders: What’s one trend in your trade that could affect the commercial real estate market? Thanks to Jon Sargent, Derrick Walker, Chris Pendroy, Naomi Lawson, Ben Hammes, Brad Schoenfelder, Jenna Kimberley, Mike Tousley, Sid Juwarker and Matt Weller for sharing your thoughts. #Trades #CommercialRealEstate #Industrial
