Symphony in Sculpture III
On Sunday, June 7 the Symphony will premiere Symphony in Sculpture III, a multimedia film project first debuted in October. Join us for the digital premiere of this Symphonic love letter to the John & Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park – and to our community.
With a special introduction from composer Steve Heitzeg and hosted by Maestro Joseph Giunta, Symphony in Sculpture III features symphonic portrayals of Ai Weiwei's Iron Tree Trunk, Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin Large, and Robert Indiana's LOVE paired with stunning original cinematography. The Symphony is joined by the Heartland Youth Choir in the final movement, LOVE.
The concert will be streamed live on the Symphony's Facebook and YouTube pages.

Joseph Giunta Conductor
One of America’s most distinguished, versatile and dynamic conductors, Joseph Giunta is a musician of international acclaim. He is recognized as an important American conductor for his innovative programming and for his compelling interpretations of traditional and new music. His musical depth combined with his boundless energy and contagious enthusiasm makes him one of the most respected and successful orchestra leaders in the United States.
Heartland Youth Choir Sandy Miller, Director
Heartland Youth Choir, founded by Barbara Sletto in 2003, provides a performance-based program for youth, emphasizing musical literacy and character development. Heartland Youth Choir provides a unique opportunity for children of diverse backgrounds with a particular aptitude in vocal music to explore that interest beyond their school setting. Quality literature from all styles and periods form the foundation for this exploration. Dedicated to excellence, Heartland Youth Choir develops musicianship and builds character of youth through the rehearsal and performance of quality choral literature.
Sandy Miller studied music education at the University of Northern Iowa. Passionate about education and music, she went on to receive her mastery in the Kodaly levels, and has taken classes in Orff for her level II certification. In 2017 Sandy received her Masters Degree in Educational Leadership and Curriculum from Drake University.
Currently, she is also an adjunct professor at Grand View College, teaching elementary music methods. Sandy has taught elementary music for the past 20 years at Des Moines Public Schools, St. Augustin, and most recently in the Johnston Community School District. She has presented at the IMEA conference, ICDA, and has directed elementary honor choirs around Iowa.
In addition to overseeing all of Heartland Youth Choir, she is the primary conductor for Cantilena, Chante, and Cantemus choirs. Working with children and adults to lead them to a life with music and constant learning is her passion.
