With COVID-19 concerns, will the Iowa State Fair still happen in August?
A big question is on the minds of Iowans as so many events are being canceled: Will there be an Iowa State Fair this year?
Iowa State Fair CEO Gary Slater told KCCI he isn't ready to cancel the festivities yet. The Iowa State Fairgrounds have canceled multiple events including World Pork Expo. Slater said the fair's staff has been watching Gov. Kim Reynolds updates closely.
He said with the changing nature of the coronavirus, they aren't willing to commit to canceling or continuing with the event.
"If you look at what's happening in the last month-and-a-half, things have changed a heck of a lot, and so if you look-forward, things are going to change a lot again," Slater said. "So, if you look forward, we want to give ourselves every advantage of saying 'yes, we are going to have an Iowa State Fair.' But we can't do it today."
Slater said by mid-June they will decide whether to cancel the Iowa State Fair or to still hold it with extra precautions.
