Algona woman recovering after serious diving accident
The Algona community is rallying around a woman and her family after a serious diving accident.
According to a GoFundMe page, Jessica Olsen was celebrating her 30th birthday at Clear Lake on July 20 when the diving accident happened. She sustained a teardrop fracture of C5, which paralyzed her.
"Next thing I remember is just like laying in the water with my eyes open, and I couldn't move. And I was just kind of like staring at the bottom of the lake," Olsen said. "I knew in the water that I was paralyzed. I knew I couldn't feel anything, do anything."
Olsen is being treated at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital in Colorado, where she is recovering and regaining movement in her body. Her husband, TJ, and her two boys are with her. She is expected to be in the hospital for at least four months before returning home.
As a nurse herself, Olsen said she's learned it's different when you're receiving care rather than giving it.
"Being the patient, on the other side, is a lot harder than being the nurse, that's for sure. So that's been real hard, but it made me realize a whole lot and made me realize I'm not as independent as I thought I was," Olsen said.
In addition to the GoFundMe page, a fundraiser event is being held at Columbia Event Center at 1505 E. Walnut Street in Algona on Sunday, Sept. 17. from 2-5 p.m. The event will feature a free donation meal and a silent auction.
