TELL US WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THIS POINT. ALYX: THEY ARE GETTING READY TO LEAVE THE SCENE. WE ARE AT801 GRAND WHERE A FIRE STARTED. WE HAVE THE CAPTAIN RANDY JONES THIS MORNING. >> 5:55 A.M. WE WERE DISPATCHED A REPORT OF A KITCHEN FIRE. ONCE WE GOT INSIDE, WE FOUND A POT ON THE STOVE THAT WAS BURNING ON THE SECOND FLOOR. WE QUICKLY PUT A LID ON IT TO EXTINGUISH IT. THE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM HAD DISCHARGED BUT DID NOT PUT THE FIRE OUT. WE EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. WE HAD QUITE A BIT OF SMOKE TO VENTILATE. WE VENTILATED THE SMOKE. ALYX: ANY SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE INSIDE THE RESTAURANT? >> NO, BUT THE RESTAURANT WILL BE CLOSED FOR SOME TIME. NO DAMAGE. Des Moines fire crews were called to 801 Grand at the Principal Building, where dispatchers indicated a fire was reported on the second floor of the building.The call came in just before 6 a.m. Thursday. A second alarm was called for, and then the fire was reportedly put out a few minutes later.The Eighth and Grand intersection was shut down, but has since reopened.KCCI's Alyx Sacks reports fire officials said the fire started when a pot was left on the stove at 801 chophouse overnight.Apparently the extinguishing system in the kitchen went off, but it didn’t put the fire out.Captain Randy Jones with the Des Moines Fire Department said there was little to no damage to the kitchen, but there was quite a mess to clean up.
