Mary and I first met in 2003 when I designed her great room the first time. Although she loved that design, as years went by a new remodel of the first floor started the ball rolling on new furniture too. We went from Shabby Chic to a timeless transitional look for her West Des Moines home.
Before
While it is still a great gathering spot for her large family, her needs changed over the years. Cozy reading spots for the family and young kids turned into more seating to accommodate grown-up kids with friends and spouses.
Design Plan
The angled leather Kaden sectional is the anchor in the room. We chose to use a complimentary sofa in fabric to add a little warmth & variety to the room. The deep pile, multi-color shag rug invites you to come to sit by the fire and plays well off of the original Sticks end table. The beautiful colors are a nice contrast to the newly refinished floors.
After
Since the kitchen changed too, we decided a taupe gray maple dining set would be a fresh look. We used Sunbrella and Crypton fabrics throughout the space to be very easy to live with and clean.
The office was a fun project that we did to surprise her husband for Christmas. We chose a beautiful watery teal fabric that let one person read while the other used the desk. The custom rug was designed to go with the chair in the perfect size for the space.
Her husband loved the room and I think the first floor remodel was a huge success! Each area has its own personality and the furniture flows beautifully off of the paint color palette of taupes, teals & ocean blues.
