DSM libraries to be open additional hours given new sales tax
The Local Option Sales Tax increase will first and most visibly impact the Des Moines Public Libraries.
Tight city budgets have caused the Des Moines library system to live through a decade of cutbacks. As aresult, all six library branches had to close an extra day of the week and cut back hours. The additional 1% Local Option Sales Tax, starting Monday, will help fund library resources.
“This is a big deal,” said Susan Woody, director of Des Moines Library. “Not only are we restoring hours, we are expanding hours.”
The Franklin Avenue Library has been closed every Thursday for the past seven years, a day that could be used to check out books and other resources.
“People still to this day come up to the doors are curious what’s going on,” Woody said. “Why isn’t the library open? They look at the hours, say that’s weird and leave.”
The Local Option Sales Tax will bring an additional $37 million that will first affect Des Moines library branches by opening doors on originally closed days.
“We are hiring new employees, and this is really exciting for us to have our workforce so beefed up and so vibrant and so excited to serve our community,” Woody said.
The libraries received $350,000 from the $37 million sales tax windfall but said it’s enough to help restore library hours and services.
