I so enjoyed presenting at the Middle America School Mental Health Conference last week! I loved the conversations that followed that sparked specific applications. One memorable conversation was with a school professional specializing in students with behavioral issues, about how to have a seclusion room that could be durable and calming. Here are some of my suggestions I gave for easy adds outside the common topic of murals and durable wall coverings. · 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 – Pale natural colors like green and blue are proven to be most calming. For durable solutions, consider colored LED strip lighting above reach in addition to dimmable white light. Nature themed lighting covers can be installed under primary lighting. · 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 – Bird and other nature sounds are proven to be most calming. Consider a speaker above the ceiling or out of reach. · 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 – Entries set the tone for the rest of the space. Simple nature or fun images on the outside of the room could be one more small thing to help break the current attitudes. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹, having option for control without needing to make decisions helps people in dysregulated states find grounding. For example, saying “I added lighting and sounds that I like, but we can change that if you like a different option we have” can make a significant difference.

As May comes to a close and Mental Health Awareness Month wraps for another year I want to encourage providers to be their best advocate for themselves. Real Self-Care lies in advocacy. Challenge your employers to create sustainable workloads and safe environments for you. Use your voice to hold state regulating bodies accountable to practices that serve not only our clients but their most valuable asset YOU. You are the tool. You are the one on the front lines holding space for true healing to take place. Without you, this work doesn’t happen. You need to be well-maintained and that work rests not only on your shoulders but your supervisors, your agencies, and state regulating bodies that create policies that dictate how this work is done. We’ve come a long way but don’t stop now.

### Addressing Isolation in Mental Health Facilities Through Creative Engagement The isolation and monotony faced by patients in mental health facilities pose significant challenges that can exacerbate existing conditions. Recognizing this pressing issue, Taylor Ragano, Miss Virginia North America 2024, launched The Boredom Relief Program. This initiative focuses on delivering an array of interactive activities—such as games, puzzles, and especially coloring books—to patients in Northern Virginia. Coloring books, in particular, have been found to possess therapeutic qualities that are instrumental in reducing stress and anxiety, functioning similarly to meditation by easing the mind through repetitive, creative actions. This endeavor not only aims to improve patients' well-being by promoting mindfulness but also seeks to foster a community atmosphere and combat the sensations of isolation these individuals often endure. As Ragano continues to expand this not-for-profit foundation, her work underscores the impact simple, yet effective, tools can have on mental health care. How do you see creative activities impacting the mental health sector in the long term? Explore her mission and join in the effort by visiting https://lnkd.in/ex-eiFtf.

Globally, mental health in the workplace is a growing concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion each year in lost productivity. In the United States alone, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that nearly one in five adults experience mental illness in a given year, impacting their ability to work effectively. Moreover, a survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that workplace stress is a significant factor contributing to mental health issues, with around 65% of Americans citing work as a top source of stress. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that employees with depression miss an average of 27 workdays per year, further highlighting the economic impact of mental health challenges in the workplace. Recognizing the importance of addressing mental health concerns, many employers are implementing initiatives such as employee assistance programs (EAPs), mental health training for managers, and flexible work arrangements to support employees' well-being and improve productivity. However, there is still a need for greater awareness, education, and destigmatization of mental health issues in the workplace to create a more supportive and inclusive environment for all employees. With a desire to make an impact and change lives, Josh Painter, Bobbie Dyer, Justin Snyder, and Joshua Adams partnered to create a film that visually told the story of mental health in America."Breakthrough" takes viewers on an emotional journey through the complexities of mental health. Through powerful storytelling and intimate interviews, "Breakthrough" offers a raw and authentic portrayal of the human experience with mental illness, highlighting the importance of understanding, compassion, and support. In the mental health field, introducing social media as a new area for institutional research ( Hub ) requires pioneering as both a thought leader and industry developer. Early on, I had to learn not to lose sleep over the work we’re creating understanding that each effort is just one step in advancing Social Media Harm Reduction. Knowing that our work is saving lives, strengthening marriages, preserving jobs, and more carries weight, especially when staying innovative, productive, and forward thinking both online and offline.
